It is believed that its magical qualities aid with the process of opening to the soul to intuition and inspiration. It is said to be food ancestral spirits, and a way of saying thank you. Copal has been used as a method of divination throughout history. In some areas, shamans would burn copal incense and interpret the smoke. In others, shamans would cast grains of maize after holding them in the smoke and chanting.
